MISTER WROTE: I used to fancy myself a purely rational being, a supreme decision maker. All of my choices were carefully thought out, pros and cons meticulously weighed, free of bias and prejudice, all perspectives considered. Of late I have discovered that I have emotions, and furthermore, that they have been working behind the scenes all along. The supposed rationality of those decisions was merely an illusion. All the time I pretended to be searching for truth, I feared and avoided it. One can take the comfortable, easy path reflexively, or by decorating it with intellectual trappings. Regardless, one is on the same path. A good defense mechanism doesn’t look like a defense mechanism.
