JULI WROTE: I’m 45 and at that point with my hair…should I continue coloring/highlighting or should I let it ‘go’? I’ve had more advice from women my age to color, saying “We’re too young to go gray.” Um, no we are not. We are coloring BECAUSE we are gray. So, is gray “bold and sophisticated” or “old and ugly”…

My take: Grey is bold and sophisticated if it is straight, thick, healthy and a really good silver, and it works with your skin tone. (I have a friend, in her high 50s, who has waist-length pure silver hair and rocks it.) But if it’s dull or kinky or the background color is losing its intensity, so that it makes you look tired or uninvested in yourself, zap it. But then, I have been coloring my hair since I was about 25, for fun (I miss my merlot period, and marigold was fun briefly) — for me hair color has always been about adornment, not authenticity.

I’m 49 & stopped coloring last year. I love my salt & pepper hair & will never color again! You’ll be happier w/your gray if the gray is the same texture as the rest of your hair. If the non-gray hair is straight & the gray is wiry or curly, the mix of textures will be hard to style.
